Bhimbetka Rock Shelters
Set inside the dense Vindhyan sandstone hills 45 km south of Bhopal, Bhimbetka exhibits the earliest traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent. Discovered in 1957 by Dr. V.S. Wakankar, these 750+ rock shelters contain vivid prehistoric cave paintings depicting hunting rituals, dancing figures, elephants, wild boars, and everyday Stone Age life rendered in natural ochre and mineral pigments.
